FreQuently Asked Questions

What are the tours like?

Sour Mash Tours offers a fun and educational experience in the best neighborhoods for bourbon drinking in Louisville, Kentucky. You'll start by getting a quick brush-up on the basics of bourbon, but most of the time will be spent tasting various brands and styles of bourbon and other American whiskeys. Tours vary, but a typical afternoon is spread across three of a neighborhood's bars, where you'll try three half-ounce samples at each stop. Every tasting is carefully curated to ensure that you get a wide array of interesting expressions, some of which you won't be able to find anywhere outside of Kentucky.

When do tours start?

Standard tours are offered on Saturdays afternoons at 2pm, but we can customize a tour for your group on weekdays and Sundays at additional times. Contact us for a personalized experience.

How long do tours last?

Typically, our 3-stop walking tour will last 1.5 to 2 hours.

What brands will I get to taste?

It's a surprise! The whiskeys that we select range from mid- to top-shelf, so you can be sure that you won't be drinking swill. We stand behind each sample as a prime example of its style.

How much will I drink?

Over the course of the tour, you'll be served the equivalent of about 3 "bar-sized" pours of bourbon in total. We encourage you to know your limits and not feel compelled to finish every sample. Be sure to arrange for transportation to your next destination following the experience. Or, better yet, stick around for dinner in the neighborhood!

Do I need to be 21 to go on a tour?

Yes, all tour participants must be at least 21 years old. All participants will be required to show verification of age in the form of a government-issued ID such as a driver's license, state ID card, or passport, and must sign a liability waiver to participate.

How far will we be walking?

You will be walking less than a half mile total during the walking tours.

What's the food situation?

All tours are scheduled between normal meal times. During the tastings, you may be offered some light snacks to cleanse your palette and enhance the tasting experience. However, all tours will wrap up at or near a restaurant that has food available for purchase.

Do you accept tips?

Yes, our tour guides do accept tips! While they are not expected, they are certainly appreciated.

Will new neighborhood tours be added?

We currently offer pre-scheduled tours in the NuLu and Butchertown neighborhoods. We have a few other areas we'd like to expand to, but nothing official just yet. Stay tuned!

What is the refund policy?

We get it - plans change. As long as you give us at least 72 hours' notice, we'll refund 100% of your purchase. A 50% refund will be given for cancellations up to 24 hours prior to the tour.
